Privacy manifests, iAd framework removal, Apple Vision Pro, Google Privacy Sandbox, and more

SDK Updates in Prep for Apple’s Privacy Manifests

New privacy manifest and SDK signature requirements for apps on iOS 17 go into effect May 1, 2024. Please consult this detailed blog post to understand what actions you may need to take on your next app update after May 1.

Important

This update is not to be confused with the separate initiative by Apple to remove the old iAd framework that provided attribution for Apple Search Ads prior to introduction of the AdServices framework (see next section). However, the SDK updates you make to address privacy manifest and signature requirements will also fulfill the updates necessary if the next section applies to you—meaning that you can combine your efforts into one app update.

SDK Updates in Prep for iAd Framework Removal

In 2023, Apple deprecated the original iAd framework used to provide attribution for Apple Search Ads (ASA) after having launched the AdServices framework in 2021. See our related blog post about Kochava support for the AdServices framework.

Apple is now communicating that they will completely remove the iAd framework from iOS within the next year and a half, and any apps with SDKs containing iAd framework code will no longer launch on iPhone or iPad.

ACTION MAY BE REQUIRED

Kochava removed any reference to the iAd framework from iOS SDKs in late 2022 in response to Apple’s shift to the AdServices framework. However, if you’re still using an older version of a Kochava iOS SDK, specifically version 6 or older, you will need to update to at least version 7. If you’re also looking to add privacy manifest support, use this moment to upgrade to SDK v8.

Measurement Support for Apple Vision Pro

In February, Kochava updated its iOS SDK with visionOS support, enabling brands to measure apps on Apple’s Vision Pro, a virtual reality headset released at Apple’s 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference.

Apple’s Vision Framework offers advanced computer vision technologies, enabling developers to create apps that deliver more immersive and interactive user experiences. The framework’s ability to process and analyze images and videos in real-time will undoubtedly lead to innovative features such as augmented reality (AR), object and scene recognition, more personalized content, and new frontiers for app innovation and customer engagement.

To measure apps on Vision Pro, be sure to use Kochava iOS SDK v8.

Google Privacy Sandbox for Android

TikTok SAN Auto-Migration Completed

For advertisers running campaigns with TikTok for Business, the automated migration of accounts to TikTok’s new self-attributing network (SAN) integration was completed in March. Please see this related blog post for further details.

If you opted out of the auto-migration, please connect with your TikTok account rep and Kochava client success manager to discuss the process for coordinated manual migration.

Meta Install Referrer Support

In January, Kochava released support for Meta Install Referrer, a new Android-specific measurement solution designed to help attribute ad views and clicks to app downloads. This helps advertisers see a more complete performance picture for their Meta Android Campaigns and will likely result in reduced unattributed installs in reporting, as some installs instead report as view-through or cross-session click-through installs. This supports same-session click-through attribution as well as use cases unsupported by Google Play Install Referrer. Read this related blog post to learn more.

New Kochava Cost Partners

Adjoe and Digital Turbine are the newest partners for Kochava cost aggregation support. Updates and enhancements were also made for InMobi and Unity Ads cost integrations. Kochava Cost enables advertisers to pull in accurate spend data across all omnichannel media partners into the Kochava dashboard for one, aggregated view. This helps advertisers better understand and visualize their return on ad spend to optimize campaigns for the greatest impact.

Steps to take with your next iOS app update after May 1, 2024

Per a February 29 post from Apple, beginning May 1, 2024, developers submitting an app update that leverages commonly used third-party software development kits (SDKs) identified by Apple will be required to update versions of these SDKs to include a privacy manifest and signature.

While the Kochava SDK has not been added to the list of SDKs requiring privacy manifests starting May 1, we recommend that our clients be aware of and start planning for what we believe will become a requirement for all mobile measurement partner (MMP) SDKs in the near future.

Please consult this helpful checklist:

#1 Understand the Impacts of Privacy Manifests

The upcoming change to Apple’s requirements is important for developers utilizing any SDKs, including Kochava iOS SDKs. The introduction of privacy manifests marks a significant shift in how developers manage third-party SDKs within their iOS apps. The core takeaway is the accountability placed on developers for all code within their apps, emphasizing the importance of understanding and managing data collection practices. Privacy manifests empower developers to retain SDK functionality while adhering to privacy standards—requiring user consent for data tracking via the App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework.

#2 Pay Special Attention to Tracking Domains

A critical aspect of implementing privacy manifests involves declaring tracking domains. This process entails identifying and declaring any domains that track users through data collected by the app. When a domain is declared, any traffic from the app to the domain is blocked if the user has not been prompted and opted in through the ATT framework. As such, incorrect implementation could unintentionally restrict essential functionalities. For this reason, it’s crucial to work closely with Kochava, and any of your other SDK providers, to ensure correct implementation.

#3 Using a Kochava SDK? Here’s What You Need to Know

Our team has released iOS SDK version 8, which adds a specific tracking module to fully support privacy manifests and the required SDK signature. Tracking domains are automatically built into v8’s privacy manifest file, meaning that developers do not have to declare these domains manually.

Please consult this support documentation, which covers the process for migrating to iOS SDK version 8.

Do you need to upgrade to iOS SDK version 8?

Yes

If you’re prompting iOS users through the ATT framework to gather the IDFA and permission to track, you need to upgrade to iOS SDK version 8.

Apple requires that if you’re gathering the IDFA via an SDK, there must be a privacy manifest with at least one blocked domain, which is included in our optional tracking module’s privacy manifest.

No

If you’re not prompting iOS users through the ATT framework to gather the IDFA and permission to track, you do not need to upgrade to iOS SDK version 8.

You can continue using prior iOS SDKs and relying on first-party measurement for owned media, the AdServices framework for Apple Search Ads, and SKAN for attribution of paid media with other third-party ad networks.

What happens if you choose the wrong path?
If you choose the incorrect path, Apple will simply reject your app submission, and you will know you need a privacy manifest. Your app will not suddenly be removed from the App Store. Contact your client success manager or Support@Kochava.com for guidance along the way.

Android-specific measurement solution benefits advertisers

App install reporting on Meta Android Campaigns is improving within Kochava. Our integrations team has been working closely with Meta on the implementation of a new solution called Meta install referrer, and we are excited to announce that support is live as of January 5, 2024. We are now able to share install-level reporting on additional measurement use cases for clients who choose to leverage this solution.

What Is Meta Install Referrer?

Meta install referrer is an Android-specific measurement solution designed to help attribute ad views and clicks to the correlating app download. This means that it supports same-session click-through attribution as well as use cases unsupported by Google Play Install Referrer: most view-through attribution and cross session click-through attribution.

What Is the User Flow?

When a user views or clicks on an advertiser’s app install ad on Meta’s app (i.e., Facebook or Instagram), Meta’s app encrypts and logs the relevant ad campaign metadata in the Meta app’s local storage layer on-device.

Once the resulting install completes and the user first opens the app, the Kochava Android software development kit (SDK) reads Meta install referrer data from the local storage layer on-device and uses it for install attribution.

How Does Meta Install Referrer Help?

Advertisers will now see a more complete performance picture for their Meta Android Campaigns. It’s anticipated that the volume of unattributed installs in your reports will reduce and instead report as view-through or cross session click-through installs.

How to Use Meta Install Referrer with Kochava

Minimum Android SDK Version
To use Meta install referrer for your Android app(s), you need to be using Kochava Android SDK version 5.1.0 or higher. Please see the Meta/Facebook entry under the Additional Steps section of this support document.

Inputting Your Install Referrer Decryption Key
To enable decryption of Meta Install Referrer payloads, be sure to follow the steps outlined in this support document to input your Install Referrer Decryption Key. For Meta install referrer, there are two steps:

1. Your application development team needs to acknowledge the on-device connection between our and Meta’s client-side tech. Simply follow these steps on your next application submission to Google Play (or respective Android APK location).

2. Kochava leverages the same process used for Google Play Install Referrer, which involves a decryption key. If you already entered this key to support Google Play Install Referrer per this support document, you do not need to repeat these steps.

Please note that the Kochava attribution waterfall uses only one of the three attribution methods across Meta install referrer, Google Play Install Referrer, and self-attributing network claims—ensuring that both aggregate and user-level output do not contain duplication.

These new install-level reports are available both through Kochava install detail reports and Kochava Query within the installs_primary table.

FAQs Answered by Meta

Is there support for iOS?
No, iOS does not have an equivalent to the Meta install referrer mechanism.

When is Meta install referrer applicable for attribution?

  • Install attribution
    • Click-through attribution for all campaigns
    • View-through attribution for all Advantage+ App Campaigns and Manual App Promotion Campaigns with broad targeting (e.g., where age, gender are set to “default).
  • Google Play Store and 3rd party app stores
  • Does not include campaigns redirecting to landing pages

How does Meta define broad targeting?
Broad targeting is required to receive view-through install data. You can find the supported campaign configuration below:

  • Age: Default setting (18-65+) is applied
  • Gender: Default setting (All genders) is applied.
  • Location: Country groups, countries are all supported.
    • Note: For more targeted locations (such as cities or zip codes), if the campaign uses inclusion targeting with any of these, it would need to be set as relaxed.
  • Detailed Targeting: Interest segments, behaviors, advanced demographics are set as relaxed.
  • Custom Audiences: Set as relaxed.
    • By relaxed, we mean that the following box should be ticked in ad campaigns:

New Account Usage Dashboard

An Account Usage dashboard is now available in the Kochava platform. It can be found under the Account Options interface by selecting Account Usage from the left-hand navigation menu.

This dashboard provides our clients with quick access to billing-related metrics, so they can understand account usage trends for a given time period. Available metrics include:

Google Ads SKAN Integration Updates

Our integrations team is actively finishing updates to our Google Ads SKAdNetwork (SKAN) integration that will

  • Migrate Google Ads SKAN data ingestion to use the v15 API, which supports SKAN 4.0 conversion data.
  • Pass SKAN conversion model mapping to Google Ads the first time a user adds their credentials to facilitate improved Google Ads SKAN reporting in Kochava.
  • Send an updated SKAN conversion model mapping to Google Ads whenever a user updates their conversion model configuration within Kochava.

Once these integration updates are completed later in January, Kochava will facilitate a one-time push to pass all existing conversion model mappings to Google Ads for any advertisers that previously entered their credentials to facilitate Google Ads SKAN reporting.

TikTok SAN Migration

Per this prior post related to the migration of TikTok for Business Ads to a self-attributing network integration model, TikTok is targeting March 20, 2024, to have all apps cut over to the new integration. TikTok account representatives are actively reaching out to encourage clients to make the transition. If you have not yet contacted Kochava to have us run the automated script that programmatically migrates your account, please reach out to your client success manager or email support@kochava.com.

Snapchat Reengagement Attribution and VTA Reporting Restrictions

If you’re running reengagement campaigns with Snapchat and would like to see increased performance for iOS, Kochava supports attribution using the campaign details included in the _Deeplink event metadata. Please reference this support doc, which outlines the required steps.
If you’re uncertain about the _Deeplink event implementation for any of your apps and whether you’re set up to benefit from this update, connect with your client success manager or email support@kochava.com.

Utilize Samsung Install Referrer

Kochava has added support for the Samsung Install Referrer (similar to Google’s Install Referrer, but for the Samsung Galaxy Store) on our native Android software development kit (SDK), and SDK wrappers (Cordova, Flutter, ReactNative, Unity, and Xamarin).

Please see the ‘Samsung Galaxy Store’ section in this support document for instructions on implementing support in your app(s). Install referrer data can be leveraged to more accurately attribute conversions on app installs where the installer package originates from the Samsung Galaxy Store, as opposed to the Google Play Store.

Unlock Apple Search Ads human-readable keywords

In our March update, we touched on the release of a significant update to our Apple Search Ads (ASA) integration that supports the retrieval of human-readable keywords from Apple’s ASA Campaign Management API. While many other MMPs charge incrementally for this feature, it’s included out-of-the-box for clients on our Advanced or Enterprise tiers. To enable this feature today for any iOS apps you measure with Kochava, please follow the steps outlined in this support document. Once activated, you will begin to see keyword names alongside the keyword IDs.

Unlock Apple Search Ads human-readable keywords

Do you spend on Apple Search Ads (ASA)? 

Kochava is excited to release a significant update to our ASA integration support that now retrieves and populates human-readable keywords from Apple’s ASA Campaign Management API. 

The shift from human-readable keywords to numerical IDs started when ASA began migrating from the longstanding iAd framework to the newer AdServices framework for ASA attribution, starting with iOS 14.3. The granular transparency of keyword detail marketers had been accustomed to within their MMP reporting for ASA became limited on the new AdServices framework. This left marketers performing spreadsheet Olympics trying to cross-check keyword IDs against their actual meanings. While attribution still continued under the iAd framework for some time after the AdServices framework was introduced, the iAd framework was formally deprecated on February 7th, 2023, leaving all ASA attribution flowing solely through the AdServices framework. 

The result of our ASA integration update is performance reporting that’s more approachable and streamlined – giving you back the human-readable keyword intel that saves you the time and headache of trying to match numerical IDs to their meanings. 

Keyword name will also be visible in Kochava Analytics for filtering, splitting, and/or grouping data visualizations. To leverage these data points in Analytics, simply look for ‘Partner Keyword’ under the ‘Attribution’ category.

SKAdNetwork 4.0 prep checklist

In our last post, we announced the launch of Kochava iOS SDK v7, which has built-in support for the SKAdNetwork 4.0 updates we will release later in April across the platform. We have now released a SKAdNetwork 4.0 Prep Checklist that walks you through the necessary implementation steps, as well as what to expect once our new SKAdNetwork 4.0 features are live in the dashboard. We encourage all clients with iOS apps measured with Kochava to consult this checklist and connect with their client success manager or support@kochava.com for any questions. 

SKAd 4.0 updates for integrated partners

The Kochava Integrations team continues proactive outreach to networks in the Kochava SKAdNetwork Certification Partner Program regarding required updates to send the new source identifier. We will need to receive this value in the parameter skad_source_identifier on all clicks and impressions. This can be manually added, or if partners have a macro for this, we can formally add it to your template. Please contact Integrations@Kochava.com with questions.

View-through reengagement update

Impression-based reengagement has undergone live testing over the last month with clients who agreed to participate in our beta testing program. As the beta testing phase ends, expect more communication via email, dashboard alerts, and our blog on the steps you can take to activate this capability across any of your pre-existing apps, where it will be disabled by default on launch. After launch, all newly created apps will have view-through/impression-based reengagement enabled by default.

Introducing Kochava iOS SDK v7 with SKAd 4.0 support

The march of progress continues on our roll-out of support for SKAdNetwork 4.0. In our last post, we touched on our updates to support the ingestion and reporting of postbacks sent for ads signed with SKAdNetwork 4.0 signatures encompassing the new source identifier with related partner campaign mapping. 

Now, we’re excited to announce the launch of Kochava iOS SDK v7 which has support built-in for the SKAdNetwork 4.0 updates we will be releasing later in April across the platform. Please coordinate with your app developers to review the iOS SDK documentation and schedule integration updates for your iOS apps ahead of our full production support roll-out. Having this updated iOS SDK in place will be a prerequisite to take advantage of SKAd 4.0’s new features and configurations in your Kochava account dashboard once they’re made available (e.g., coarse grained conversion values, multiple postbacks, lock window handling, etc.). The new SDK is fully backward compatible with prior versions of SKAdNetwork and early integration will not impact existing SKAdNetwork functionality.

Please keep in mind that your ad network partner(s) will need to first support signing ads with v4.0, as the ad signature is the catalyst for 4.0 postbacks. Contact your Client Success Manager or email Support@Kochava.com for questions.

Machine Advertising is now part of Kochava

Upgrade your Kochava Android SDK version to 3.11 or above

Google is working toward its enforcement deadline relating to the updated Google Play policy that prohibits collection of both the ADID and Android ID in tandem. If you’re measuring Android apps with Kochava and have any apps leveraging an Android SDK version that’s less than v3.11, please update your integration ASAP to use version 3.11 or higher.

As always, we recommend being on the most recent SDK version to include all of the latest features and capabilities.

If you have an app in distribution using an SDK version older than 3.11, you may receive, or have already received, messaging from Google Play on this matter. Feel free to contact your Client Success Manager or email Support@Kochava.com if you need help running a check across your Android apps.

iAd deprecation was on February 7th

In late December, Apple advised that it was going to deprecate the iAd framework for Apple Search Ads (ASA) on February 7th, 2023. If you have not already upgraded your Kochava iOS SDK to a version that enables ASA attribution via the new AdServices framework, then you’re no longer compatible to receive attribution on your ASA campaigns. Please make required SDK updates ASAP. The minimum Kochava iOS SDK version with AdServices support is v4.4.0.

Welcome to 2023! The new year has started off strong with exciting updates and advancements. We’re thrilled to continue building upon what we accomplished last year. SKAdNetwork 4.0 postback support

Kochava now supports data ingestion of SKAdNetwork 4.0 postbacks with data being accessible in Kochava Query. If you’re sprinting for early adoption of SKAdNetwork 4.0 and will be using a server-to-server integration approach where you’re mapping your own conversion models, lock windows, etc., Kochava will receive and surface all of the new data fields – ensuring no data loss. Please keep in mind that your ad network partner(s) will need to first support signing ads with v4.0, as the ad signature is the catalyst for 4.0 postbacks. Google App campaigns for pre-registration now supported

Kochava now supports Google’s App Campaigns for pre-registration. App campaigns for pre-registration enable marketers to drive proactive excitement for an app or game before its official launch – generating an early install base that gives user acquisition for new titles an immediate bump. Once your app or game is live and installs begin, Kochava’s integration with Google allows for install attribution back to these pre-registration ads. You can find the results from this new Google Ads campaign type in both Kochava Query and Reporting (when “include SAN claim data” is  part of the requested report).

Please note that this is a newer campaign type that’s not yet available to all advertisers, so be sure to ask your Google account representative about your options for early access. View-through reengagement attribution coming soon

Kochava product and engineering teams are in the final stages of testing and rolling out support for view-through attribution on re-engagement campaigns. Kochava has long supported click-through attribution for re-engagement campaigns, but this marks a major expansion of performance visibility where impressions can now be attributed to any post-install event designated as a conversion on your re-engagement trackers. 

A number of clients are about to begin testing this new functionality in beta phase, with a full production release and general availability set for March. Please be on the lookout for additional email communications related to updated control settings at the app level within your account. Due to the potential for view-through attribution on re-engagement campaigns to greatly increase attributed conversion volumes, this feature will be auto-defaulted to ‘off’ on any existing app within your account. This means you will have full control of whether or not to activate impression-based re-engagement on each of your existing apps. After the full production release, newly created apps will have the app-level feature auto-defaulted to “on”.

iAd deprecation coming February 7th

In late December, Apple advised that it will be deprecating the iAd framework for Apple Search Ads (ASA) on February 7th, 2023. If you have not already upgraded your Kochava iOS SDK to a version that enables ASA attribution via the new AdServices framework, please do so ASAP. The minimum Kochava iOS SDK version with AdServices support is v4.4.0.

Leveraging MMP data with Search Ads Maven’s Scripted Automation

You can now tap into your MMP data and drive unlimited potential for ASA campaign automation. Remember that ASA, unlike most other super publishers, does not support post-install event postbacks to be used for app event optimization. As such, any optimization you may want to do based on how certain keywords drive lower funnel performance outcomes, is a manual and painstaking process – UNLESS you have a way to automate it. 

In January, the Search Ads Maven team added Scripted Automation. It’s a breakthrough tool that puts marketers in the driver’s seat to create tailored automation rules for the optimization of ASA keyword bidding. Unlike basic automation rules, Scripted Automation has no limits or barriers based on predefined triggers, filters, or action types. The sky is literally the limit.

While a keyword may seem to perform well based on total taps and installs, it may severely underperform in driving a brand’s main key performance indicators, which happens after an install. As an example, a major fintech company built a trigger around their max tap-to-action cost where the desired action is a registration as measured through Kochava (not just an app install). When the tap-to-action cost exceeds a specified amount, let’s say, $15.00, they can auto-decrease the keyword spend and re-allocate it to keywords where the tap-to-action cost is within their desired range. Previously, the marketing team had to do this manually. Now, this process can be fully automated and always-on.

SKAdNetwork 4.0 support roadmap for Kochava

Here at Kochava, we’re excited to support the next generation of Apple’s SKAdNetwork. Due to the changes Apple introduced in v4.0, we sit at an opportune moment to reimagine and reinvigorate how advertisers integrate and capitalize on what SKAdNetwork has to offer. Adoption curves of prior SKAdNetwork versions, particularly the roll-out of v2.0 and later v3.0, make it clear that it will take the key supply-side players more time to adapt and begin signing ads with 4.0. As the graph below illustrates, adoption typically takes between 4-6 months before we see critical mass.

We are in constant communication with both our supply-side partners and demand-side clients. From our early conversations with these primary partners on their planned timing for beginning to sign ads with v4.0, we intend to stage our support rollout accordingly. This balances the need to observe how the industry is using these additional data points (e.g., how source ID is behind defined) with ensuring our clients have the opportunity to leverage SKAdNetwork v4.0 functionality at the earliest practical application.

Here are the key waypoints in Kochava’s planned support roadmap for SKAdNetwork 4.0:

    • Update data ingestion to capture new v4.0-specific values (e.g., source identifier, coarse value [for early adopters using server-to-server (S2S) integration])

    • Official release of iOS SDK for use in production

      • New analytics visualizations
      • New iOS reporting layers

Measure your Criteo spend with Kochava Cost

Kochava Cost has continued to expand its roster of supported partners since its release in Q1 2022. Criteo became the latest partner to be added in November.

Marketers running campaigns with Criteo can now measure and attribute conversions to those campaigns with Kochava and connect with Criteo’s cost API to pull in highly detailed spend data. This provides the most seamless data flow for calculating an accurate return on ad spend in one dashboard.

A number of updates and enhancements were deployed throughout the dashboard, including: 

  • Optimization of the Event Detail view within analytics to address occasional discrepancies between the figures in data visualizations versus analytics data exports.
  • Updates to Kochava Audiences to refine how analytics event-based filters impact audiences that are saved or exported from analytics views.
  • New exception handling for Snapchat’s audience API when logging in from Kochava Audience’s tool to authenticate an account for audience syndication and activation.

iOS 16.1 & SKAdNetwork 4.0, Product Updates, and more

In the upper Pacific Northwest at Kochava’s HQ in the beautiful resort town of Sandpoint, the cold and snow came almost as suddenly as Apple’s release of iOS 16.1 and SKAdNetwork 4.0. Thankfully, though, neither the snow nor Apple’s news was unwelcome, and we can begin to prepare for more updates that will undoubtedly materialize in the near future.

iOS 16.1 & SKAdNetwork news

On October 24th, Apple’s release of iOS 16.1 brought  forth SKAdNetwork 4.0 with new updates and details related to:

  • And more

With Xcode 14.1 released in early November, our developers are working on an updated iOS software development kit (SDK) to fully support advertisers on the next iteration of SKAdNetwork. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements on SDK releases and guidance on any next steps you need to take.

Other noteworthy platform updates

Kochava Cost continues to support more media partners each month. In October, Tapjoy joined the list of integrations with our cost aggregation tool. Learn more about Cost and all of its integrations on our support documentation.

You may have noticed the streamlined left-hand navigation with spacing minimization allowing more area for our ever-expanding menu of platform tools.

Google Marketing Platform (GMP) integration

In October, we rolled out a big update to the GMP DV360 and CM360 integration and are now passing dynamic uVars or custom floodlight variables that advertisers can use across over-the-top (OTT) and mobile campaigns to pass meta data, such as show and episode titles, custom IDs and more. uVars can be populated dynamically and will surface in the GMP dashboard for reporting purposes and applications for remarketing segmentation.
